Wallpaper* explores ever-innovative Hong Kong, where art, design, craft and culture collide, and discovers how the city works, makes, survives and thrives in 2021

Hong Kong’s culture of creativity is multi-storied, multidisciplinary, aesthetically diverse and generationally fluid. The revival and rebirth has been ongoing, thanks to renewed interest from the young people, collaborations between traditional craft designers and contemporary designers. 
 
Hidden away among Hong Kong’s future-facing vertical playground of spectacular structures by architects such as IM Pei, Norman Foster and César Pelli, new talents and cutting-edge processes synergise alongside traditional crafts, old skills and ancient philosophies. 
 
Over the next few weeks, Wallpaper* will be exploring Hong Kong’s new creative communities, visiting the ateliers and backstreet workshops of makers, artists, designers and craftspeople – effigy specialists, cobblers, street art mavericks, and itinerant industrial designers – discovering how this mega seaport-turned-maximum city works, makes, survives and thrives in 2021.

Design: LAYER x Benjamin Hubert

Nodding to a passion for music, design and craftsmanship, the Beosound Balance speaker by Bang & Olufsen (Denmark) is inspired by interior objects to redefine home audio. A soft, rounded silhouette uses materials such as solid oak and knitted textiles and hides an innovative user interface and seven carefully placed speaker drivers with beam-forming technology. Listeners choose between powerful, room-filling sound for everyday listening, and directional sound for precise and immersive music experiences.
